Forgiveness: is forgiving hard? Why try?

For littler ones: When somebody hurts you, is it hard to forgive them? Why would you want to?

Forgiveness — Is forgiving hard? Why try?

This week, at the close of the year, we're wondering about forgiveness — and the hard part of it. Is forgiving hard? And if it is, why try at all? It's a good thing to turn over in the car or at the table, in a season when everyone's a little closer together. Nobody at your house has to land in the same place.

This week's stories

Classics

Beauty and the Beast

A girl who is kept by a Beast — fearsome, and not gentle at the start — and slowly comes to look past the shape of him to something underneath.

Classics

Cinderella, or The Little Glass Slipper

A girl by the cinders with two stepsisters who were cruel to her — really cruel — and who, at the end, she does not pay back in kind.

Talk about it

  • Is there someone it would be hard for you to forgive? What makes it hard?
  • Cinderella doesn't get back at her stepsisters when she could. Why do you think she chooses that? Would you?
  • When you forgive someone, what changes — for them, or for you, or for both?

A new question every week.
